6 Important Things to Know to Save Money on Groceries

Shopping is a critical activity if you are on a budget. Some people who are short on money dread going to the supermarket for fear of spending more than they can afford. However, grocery shopping shouldn’t be a problem if you know some time-tested ways to save money on groceries. Here are some hints.

1. Take advantage of store brands. They are usually cheaper than the rest of the other choices, and a lot of them aren’t bad at all. Stop being brand conscious. Sometimes the only difference between brands is the packaging.

2. Stock up whenever products are on sale, but don’t buy too much. You might end up wasting money by buying something that you really don’t need or buying too much that the goods expire long before you are able to use them up. Whenever you see sale items, check their expiration date first and judge how much you can stock within that time frame.

3. Don’t shop when you are hungry. Food really looks good when your stomach is grumbling and this will increase your propensity to buy more than you need. Go to the grocery after meals or eat a light snack before stepping into the store. You can save a lot of money by buying only what you really need.

4. Keep coupons only of the things you actually buy. Coupons can really shave off some significant portions of your overall grocery expenditure. However, you shouldn’t buy something just because you have a coupon for it. When you collect coupons, pick only those that concern the goods you actually buy, save some of those you think you might buy in the future, and discard all the other coupons.

5. Stay alert at the counter. A lot of people want to speed things up at the cashier and some others don’t bother to look at what is happening at the registers. Pay attention as you check out to ensure that all items are priced correctly and there are no items doubled on the register.

6. Always compare prices even if you are sure certain brands are cheaper than others. Don’t stick to one brand unless you prefer its taste or other characteristics. Always check the price first. Some items may be on sale at a certain point and you will want to take advantage of this opportunity.

It is easy to save money on groceries if you know your way around. Be smart and alert in the supermarket and you will surely save a lot.

How to Organize a Car Pool to Reduce Gas Expenses

Who would not want to spend less money at their local gas station every week? It would be hard to find someone who is not interested in conserving gas, but doing so is much harder than it would seem to be, at times. One of the most obvious ways to reduce fuel expenses is to simply not drive, but for many people, that is really not feasible. After all, most people have responsibilities that require them to be at specific places at certain times, and this in turn requires them to operate a motor vehicle to get there.

However, many people are not taking advantage of the somewhat popular practice of car pooling. Car pooling has been around for years now, and while it has steadily increased in popularity, it still is not as widely used as it should be. The reasons vary, as some people simply prefer to drive by themselves to and from places, and others do not know anyone that lives near them, or do not want to coordinate a regular car pool. The reality is, however, if you want to save money on gas, there are few better ways to do so than by participating in a car pool.

Organizing a car pool can be fairly simple. For instance, it can be as easy as posting a sign up at your work, or asking around to see if anyone who shares your place of employment lives near you. If they live along your route to work, you can also simply pick them up every day, in exchange for a little monetary contribution towards the expense of gas. This will not cause you any major inconvenience, but it will save you a lot of money spent on fueling up your car each week!

Many people only think of car pooling as a way to get to and from work, but there are many other times when a car pool is an equally great idea. For instance, you can form a car pool with people that live near you for things such as going to the gym, shopping at the grocery store, or heading out to the mall. If you are planning on taking a vacation, it can be a very expensive endeavor, especially if you will be driving. However, if you pair up with a couple that you enjoy being around, you can all take one car and cut your gas costs literally in half!

It may not always be convenient to car pool, but the barriers are usually not that serious. What you really have to consider is whether it is worth it to you to have the comfort of driving in silence and solitude, even if it means that you will pay the full cost of gas all by yourself. Most people would rather have a little company, all while saving some money at the fuel pump. That is why car pools continue to be a fairly common thing, even to this day. If you have never tried car pooling before, give it a shot! With gas prices being so high, there really has never been a better time than now to give car pooling a chance. You never know, you may even enjoy the company and make a new friend or two!

Great if you have a big paycheck coming regularly. But what if you’re finally feeling that cable TV fee is getting a big chunk of your budget? Don’t fret. Here are ways to save money on your cable TV subscription:

Power of comparison shopping

Check out other cable service providers and compare if you can get a better deal from other cable companies. Ways to Conserve Energy on Your AC Unit

Posted on 31. May, 2009 by Mark Coleman.

Summer’s a very expensive season, especially for those living in tropical countries. Why? It requires people to often turn on their appliances thats keeps them cool.

Among all these appliances, AC units are the most electricity consuming devices. And this is the very reason you need to learn how to save money through conserving energy in using air conditioning units. Although you don’t want to buy one, you just have to or else you might be a victim of heat stroke or more expenses due to the computer overheating and other damages to your home appliances due to overheating.

Here are some tips on how you can save electricity while keeping yourself sane and safe from the heat of the summer:

- In buying an AC unit, check if it has the Energy Star label. This label assures that the AC unit is energy efficient. And an energy efficient air conditioning unit translates to saving you more money.

- Avoid installing your air conditioner where there’s direct sunlight. Your AC unit will use more energy if it’s placed where direct sunlight is. Use tall plants or an awning at least, to avoid exposing your AC unit to sunlight.

- Don’t install your AC unit near appliances that emits heat such as irons, TV, computer and refrigerator.

- Keep the AC unit to fan setting first for about 10 to 15 minutes before using it’s cooling setting to get rid of the hot air from the vicinity of the AC unit.

- Keep all the windows and doors close while the air condition unit is operating. This is to avoid the AC unit from overworking. Make sure that you get all your things that you need inside before you start working. This is so you don’t have to keep on opening and closing the door letting the cool air out every so often.

- If you can, make sure that the AC unit isn’t used during the hottest times of the day, usually from 11 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. Run it full blast when it’s not too hot and lower it’s cooling setting or switch it off during the aforementioned times of the day.

- Get a cleaning service and get it checked by a professional AC maintenance guy at least every 6 months to keep the air conditioning unit in its best form.

Sale Day Alert: Use Technology to Save Money

Posted on 29. May, 2009 by Mark Coleman.

What if you are in a big city where shops abound and you can’t keep tabs on all those sale days that you’re dying to take advantage of? How do you make sure that you don’t get left unnotified?

Here are two ways that can help you stay informed whenever your favorite stores announce sale or discount days:

Email Alerts

Stores are now learning to market their goods and services via email. You can opt for sale day alerts through typing in your e-mail to their sites’ email alert page.

SMS Alerts

A wide variety of shops are now getting more and more comfortable with the use of technology, specifically with the mobile technology on making their business grow. As a marketing tool, cellular phones are now used to alert customers of any announcements these technology savvy shops have to communicate. Usually, customers or clients are given certain keywords and numbers to get registered or to subscribe to any alerts.

RSS Feeds

Customers that are familiar with the Internet technology can also be notified of any rummage sales, garage sales or discount days using this web tool RSS. RSS stands for really simple syndication. It is the use of RSS readers or news aggregators to help people compile the list of websites they like to keep updated with.

How do you use RSS feeds to get sale alerts? Here are the steps to learn how to use the RSS technology.

1. Sign up for an RSS reader. RSS readers or news aggregators are like machines that will be your repository of the news feeds or alerting devices of all the websites you want to keep on reading without visiting those sites every so often. The most popular RSS readers are Bloglines and Google Reader.

2. Start collecting RSS feeds. There are a couple of ways to gather RSS feeds. Go to a website, specifically, your favorite shop’s website. Then, look for an orange block with white arcs inside, which is the universal symbol for RSS feeds. Click that graphic and you will be lead to a page to help you subscribe. Choose the reader which you use and that site’s feed will get added to your list of sites that you subscribe to on your RSS reader. Just repeat that procedure when you discover the other web sites that you want to be informed about whenever they get updated.

3. Read the feeds whenever updates are posted on your reader. That way you will only go to the site if there’s something new or if there’s a sale day that’s announced. Less hassle.

Hydrogen from Chocolate Waste - for Fuel?

Posted on 29. May, 2009 by Mark Coleman.

Energy issues are currently being faced by almost every country today. One possible answer is hydrogen fuel. But can hydrogen be really used for fuel?

If people want to use hydrogen for fuel, then there is a need to create usable hydrogen and one way to do that is through chocolate production.

Whenever hydrogen fuel is mentioned, techies, scientists, and even politicians seem to have a glassed look. Honestly speaking, hydrogen can be considered as the perfect fuel. If combined with an oxygen molecule, electricity can be produced. Perhaps you’re already aware that hydrogen makes up the largest part of the atmosphere. If it can be used to generate energy, then pollution and greenhouse gases can be reduced. Does that sound great or what?

However, one problem faced by scientists and researchers is that most of the hydrogen found in the atmosphere is not usable. Oftentimes, hydrogen sticks to another element and a very good example is water (H2O). Great power is required whenever hydrogen is separated from another element.

Honda is among the leaders in the auto industry and currently, they are testing hydrogen powered vehicles on the road. In the US, some families are experimenting with such vehicles. According to the test runs, the cars efficiently work but the main problem is powering the cars. In order to give the car power, the families should take their car to a specialized Honda facility. The facility has solar panels and a tank of hydrogen. At the moment, this set up might work but what if millions of cars are already using hydrogen fuel? Problems will surely arise.

At present, solar power is the most efficient way of creating usable hydrogen although there are still other conversion methods. As mentioned earlier, usable hydrogen can also be created through chocolate production. This may sound humorous to some but in the United Kingdom, a number of scientists discovered this fact. In the production of chocolates, there are waste products and these wastes can be used to produce usable hydrogen.

The chocolate waste needs to be treated with a certain bacteria called e coli’. The treatment will in turn produce hydrogen. Further studies are still being conducted with regards to the use of chocolate waste products to create usable hydrogen.

If in the future the process can be proven quite effective, the chocolate factories are bound to play a very important role in producing hydrogen to be used as fuel. This is great news since more and more people are now aware of the great uses of hydrogen fuel. Now, since there are a lot of chocolate factories around the world, it only means that more usable hydrogen can be created. The next step is to teach chocolate factories how to treat the wastes from chocolate production with e coli.

The advanced technology of today has greatly helped in conducting complicated studies especially in hydrogen production. With the joint efforts of private establishments and various governments, the use of hydrogen for fuel will become more popular and affordable.

Now, every family can help in preserving the planet. With a lot of problems surfacing due to excessive pollution and greenhouse gases, the use of hydrogen for fuel might be the best answer and solution. Why not try using hydrogen as well?

How Maintaining Your Car Helps You Save Gas

Posted on 29. May, 2009 by Mark Coleman.

If you drive even somewhat regularly, it is likely that you are as sick of high gas prices as the rest of us are. However, there is very little that any of us can do to directly affect the price of gas, so we are forced to turn our attention to doing whatever we can to limit the amount of gas that we use. You may or may not be aware that there are very easy methods for increasing the gas mileage you get in your car, van, truck or sport utility vehicle. In fact, many of the ways that you can help your vehicle’s gas mileage are through simple maintenance that you should be performing on your vehicle anyway!

It is unfortunate that many who are attempting to escape high gas prices have turned to costly products that claim they can help your vehicle get more gas mileage. Of course, it makes little sense to spend money in order to save money, particularly when these products are largely unproven to begin with. That is why when you are trying to dramatically increase your vehicle’s gas mileage, it is better to stick to the more reliable, more basic methods instead. These methods definitely include performing the regular maintenance that your car requires already.

Most drivers are fairly diligent about getting oil changes regularly for their vehicle. After all, regular oil changes are among the most fundamental (and cheap) ways to maintain your vehicle’s performance and condition. Many people do not know, however, that regular oil changes also help to limit fuel consumption! That means that you will save money in the end, even if you have to spend money to perform an oil change or have one done for you. Also, while you’re at it, make sure that your car is running on the appropriate grade of oil. This can reduce your fuel consumption by one or two percent.

One of the better ways to easily increase your car’s gas mileage is also one of the easiest. The next time you pull up to a gas station or car wash that has an air pump, check the air pressure in your tires and add air, if necessary. At many gas stations or car washes, this will not cost you anything. Even if the only machine you can find is a pay machine, it will still likely only cost you as much as fifty cents. The price (or lack thereof) and simplicity of this method makes it a great way to help keep yourself away from the gas pump.

Another type of regular maintenance that your car requires consists of regular tune-ups. Tune-ups help to ensure that your car is performing as well as it should be, including in respect to gas mileage. Also, most tune-ups include a check of other important areas, which may reveal a problem with your car that is costing you valuable gas mileage. Fixing many of these areas may result in drastically improved performance and gas mileage, so that is a side benefit of tuning your car, as well.

The vehicle maintenance that will net you the most improved gas mileage is definitely that of checking and replacing dirty, clogged air filters. If your air filters are filthy, make sure to switch them out with clean, new ones right away! Doing so can boost your gas mileage by one-tenth! That is a pretty significant amount when you consider today’s unsavory gas prices. Think about one-tenth of a gallon of gas where you live. That’s how much you can expect to save, per gallon, if you drive with clean (rather than a dirty) air filters.

These types of relatively simple vehicle maintenance prove once and for all that it is not necessary to buy costly products to increase your gas mileage. Simply do the maintenance that you should already be doing for your car, and you will reap the benefits!

Which Saves More? Prepaid or Postpaid?

Posted on 27. May, 2009 by Mark Coleman.

Prepaid cell phone plans are practical because they don’t require credit checks. If you don’t use your cell phone on a frequent basis, then you can manage your spending by going for the prepaid services.

With pre-paid plans, you buy the minutes you use your phone in advance. When you replenish these minutes, you can either buy or not buy more. There is so many companies offering that service so choose the one that is right for you.

The best thing about pre-paid phone services is that there are no contracts for you to sign. There are no monthly bills for you to save up for when you get your paycheck. There are no long term commitments so you need not worry if you want to get out of the plan because there is no plan to begin with.

There are also no credit checks and no hidden fees. Plus, there is no age limit so anyone who wants to have the prepaid service can go and get one.

Prepaid cell phone prevents you or your loved ones from spending too much. With prepaid plans, you only pay for what you spend and can go for as long as you want to go. You call the shots.

Just like with prepaid calling cards, you get the phone activated and then pay for the minutes that you want to use in your account. While you are using the phone, the minutes are deducted from the prepaid account. If you are running low on your minutes, you can buy more minutes.

Prepaid plans are perfect if you don’t know exactly your usage budget. Those who have postpaid plans are those who have already paid for their minutes in advance. Now their concern is to spend that much in order to make their fee their money’s worth.

Problems with postpaid plans are that if you incur more than what you have paid for, you have to pay for the additional expenses. This is exactly the opposite of not using everything that you’ve paid for. If that is the case, you don’t see getting your money back.

Studies show that those who have postpaid plans are those who are constantly using their cell phones: businessmen, executives, doctors, lawyers. They can’t risk running low in minutes when they handling important calls.

If you want to save more, then you should go for prepaid. Just make sure that you get what you’ve paid for.
